We are pleased to announce that our former associate Laura Sanom will be rejoining the firm as a telepracticing attorney within the next few weeks. We have not attempted such an arrangement before, and are looking forward to it. The conditions for this new type of arrangement appear to us to be ideal, because Laura was trained by us and practiced with FG&I for over three years. Laura is admitted to practice in Ohio, Michigan, and New Jersey.
In a coinage of our own, we have chosen to call this arrangement telepracticing (rather than telecommuting) to reflect the facts that law practice -- especially a business litigation practice -- is not a commuter's job, and that the geographic scope of our firm's work frequently crosses state boundaries. Indeed, we currently have cases in approximately 15 states, including New York, California, and numerous states in between.
Laura came with us as an associate in 1989 when the firm started. Laura practiced here until 1992, when she married and moved to New Jersey, where her fiancÚe was located. She is a 1987 graduate of George Washington University. After leaving FG&I, Laura practiced in the litigation department of the firm of McElroy, Deutsch & Mulvaney in Morristown, New Jersey. Last year, Laura and her husband, Bill, returned to their hometown, Detroit, with their two daughters.
Laura will be telepracticing with our firm, meaning that most of her contact with the firm will be via telephone and e-mail from her home near Detroit. She will also be included on our firm's voice mail and internal e-mail systems.
In other news, Jeff Ireland is one of the faculty members of the November 18, 1998, Deposition Skills Workshop, at the Ohio CLE Institute in Columbus. Both Jeff and Charlie have taught this and other litigation skills programs, as well as conducted classes on other legal subjects.
