JANUARY NEWSLETTER
FG&I Partner Mary Wiseman completed her tenure as a Dayton City Commissioner at the end of December, happily "retired" from government service. Mary was featured in a December 9, 2001, Dayton Daily News article, reflecting on her years on the Commission. Opting not to pursue re-election, Mary has returned to full-time practice at FG&I. We welcome her back.
FG&I associate Ron Raether was featured in a December 7, 2001, Dayton Business Journal article entitled: "Just for the HACK of it -- Experts Find Loopholes in Wireless Networks." The article, which highlighted efforts of local entrepreneurs to help clients protect their wireless computer networks, addressed a significant liability exposure risk to businesses and institutions. Ron offered insights on the need to take steps to avoid the risk of litigation by customers whose information might be stolen by a hacker. Ron also noted that some insurers are offering corporations insurance policies to protect against such lawsuits.
Charlie Faruki gave two CLE programs last month at the request of the Dayton Bar Association. Charlie was asked to speak at a program (titled "Classroom to Courtroom -- Civil Practice"), on the topic of tips for drafting responsive pleadings; the seminar was geared toward novice lawyers, and served as a refresher for more senior attorneys. Charlie also presented the litigation component of a program entitled "Legal Issues Involving the Internet." Charlie's topics included applicable substantive law, recent statutory changes including the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, caselaw developments, and personal jurisdiction issues.
