OCTOBER NEWSLETTER
Jeff Cox gave an October 4 lunch presentation to the Corporate Counsel Committee of the Dayton Bar Association, speaking on the subject of electronic discovery. In a February 2000 article from U.S. News & World Report Online, it was reported that 93% of corporate documents are created electronically, and that 70% of those documents are never migrated to paper. The article also reported that office workers exchange an estimated 2.8 billion e-mails per day in the United States. Given these statistics, FI&C is working with its clients to help them prepare for electronic discovery by providing guidance to in-house counsel regarding electronic data management and record retention policies.
Last month Charlie Faruki was again selected by other lawyers to be included in The Best Lawyers in America. Charlie has been included in that volume since 1987, and was again selected for the 2003-2004 edition. The notification letter to Charlie stated that it was a special honor because he is one of only 5,787 lawyers in the United States who have been listed in Best Lawyers in America for ten years or more since the series began to be published in the 1980's.
Tom Kraemer is once again teaching as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Dayton School of Law this fall. Tom is in his third year teaching "Legal Profession III," a course focusing on appellate advocacy and procedure. Earlier this year, in the 2002 Spring Semester, Tom co-taught with FI&C associate Ron Raether an intellectual property civil trial practice course at the law school.
Charlie Faruki spoke at the Dayton Bar Association's October 4 continuing legal education seminar focusing on the subject of professionalism. Charlie is a frequent presenter at Ohio CLE programs and will be presenting, as will Jeff Ireland, at the Ohio State Bar Association's annual Antitrust Institute on November 1, 2002.
On Monday, September 30, FI&C Associate Andy Gottman successfully argued State v. Ruby, a criminal appeal before Ohio's Second District Court of Appeals that Andy accepted on a pro bono basis. On Friday, October 4, the Court overturned the conviction of Mr. Ruby, determining that his trial lawyer had provided ineffective assistance of counsel
Once again, FI&C is participating in the Dayton Bar Association-Thurgood Marshall Law Society Barbara Jordan Roundtable's Summer Minority Clerkship Program. Now in its seventh year, the program is designed to strengthen the diversity of the Dayton legal community, as well as provide assistance to minority students seeking to expand their practical skill sets. FI&C has been a long-time supporter of the program, and looks forward to providing a summer 2003 clerkship opportunity through this initiative. FI&C is always looking for outstanding summer clerkship candidates regardless of gender, race, religious or ethnic background, and anticipates a 2003 summer clerk class of 4-6 individuals.
