FI&C associate Ron Raether has been selected by the Dayton Business Journal as a 40 Under 40 award winner for 2003, and was recognized at the April 10, 2003 awards banquet as one of Dayton's emerging generation of new leaders. Ron concentrates his practice in the area of technology-related litigation. Ron is a 1996 graduate of the University of Dayton School of Law where he was a member of the Law Review. Prior to joining FI&C, Ron clerked for Montgomery County Common Pleas Judges Jack Meagher and Adele Riley. Ron is active in Dayton's technology business incubator, the I-Zone, serving on its Steering Committee.
In a lengthy decision, Chief Judge Rice has rejected challenges to various Lanham Act claims (trademark infringement, false advertising and unfair competition, and trademark dilution), and to common law claims for trademark infringement, deceptive trade practices, trademark dilution, and tortious interference with a business relationship. Faruki Ireland & Cox represents the plaintiff corporation, a provider of online research products and services; the defendant is a competitor that provides services over the internet. The court's ruling includes an extensive discussion of the law of dilution. Faruki Ireland & Cox attorneys Charlie Faruki, Tom Kraemer, and Don Burton represent the plaintiff.
On April 4, 2003, FI&C played host to a delegation of eleven Russian lawyers visiting Dayton to learn more about the way American lawyers practice law and contribute to the academic, governmental and business institutions of the United States. The delegation was sponsored by the United States Department of State and the San Francisco-based Center for Citizen Initiatives, an outgrowth of the Marshall Plan dating back to the post-World War II efforts to rebuild Europe. The visit was coordinated locally by the Dayton Rotary and the Dayton Bar Association Foundation. FI&C was one of four law firms visited by the delegation; the day was spent demonstrating how FI&C attorneys practice complex business litigation, and how FI&C employs technology to maximize the ability of FI&C attorneys and staff to manage the many large matters regularly part of the firm's active case docket. Jeff Cox and FI&C's Executive Director John Kendall coordinated and oversaw the day's presentations.
Michele Murphy joined FI&C as an associate in April. Michele has been with FI&C for the last several months in a contract position and has now joined the firm full-time. She is a Phi Beta Kappa cum laude graduate of Georgetown University, and a 1985 graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Law. Michele also holds an MLS degree from the University of Kentucky School of Library and Information Science, and is a member of the Board of Trustees for Invest in Neighborhoods, Inc., and for the Clifton Town Meeting Community Council.
