A partner at FI&C, Tom joined the firm in 1992 after a two-year clerkship with the Honorable Walter H. Rice of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. He has represented the firm's clients in a wide variety of complex commercial matters, including intellectual property, securities, construction, antitrust and environmental litigation. Tom's trial practice has included cases in both federal and state courts, as well as several arbitration proceedings before the National Association of Securities Dealers. He also has counseled other lawyers on disciplinary matters.

Tom's appellate experience includes matters in the United States Supreme Court, the Supreme Court of Ohio, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Sixth Circuit and in the Ohio courts of appeals. He has represented clients in white collar criminal matters and also has served as independent counsel to investigate allegations of unlawful conduct. Tom has extensive experience in class actions, from both the plaintiff's and the defendant's perspective.

Since 1999 Tom has been an adjunct professor at the University of Dayton School of Law, where he teaches legal writing and civil trial practice, and coordinates the school's intellectual property moot court program. He has spoken on various aspects of intellectual property litigation at numerous seminars and has been named an Ohio Super Lawyer since 2007.

Tom majored in Asian Studies at the University of Virginia. He completed a summer course at Nankai University, Tianjin, People's Republic of China, and graduated from a two-year program at Nichibei Kaiwa Gakuin, Tokyo, Japan in 1987. Before turning to the practice of law, Tom worked for the Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, Board of Education from 1983 to 1985, and served as Grants/Research Director for Refugees International-Japan from 1985 through 1987. He is a member of Dayton's Sister City Committee and has participated in official delegations to Oiso, Japan and Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina. Tom is past president of the Dayton Area Rugby Club and, when not practicing law or playing rugby, can usually be found trekking in the Himalayas or kayaking in the Pacific.
