The greater Dayton area, with a population of 950,000, offers many of the benefits of a large city while retaining many of the attractive features associated with a smaller city. Long known as the Birthplace of Aviation, the area has a history of innovation. Dayton residents lay claim to a vast array of important inventions besides manned flight, including the cash register, automated teller machines, liquid crystal displays, automobile self-starter, anti-lock brakes, road-sensing suspension systems, price scanners, parking meters and pop top cans, to name but a few. Dayton is the headquarters for various Fortune 500 and other large public and privately-held corporations and their divisions including Cox Newspapers, Inc., Bank of America, Cargill, Inc., Crown Equipment Corporation, LexisNexis, Miami Valley Hospital, NCR Corporation, Reynolds & Reynolds and The Iams Company, all of which are clients of FI&C.
The Dayton metropolitan area has one of the world's highest concentrations of technical experts; over 23,000 scientists, engineers, computer specialists and technicians are employed in the Dayton area. The Dayton area is one of the top 25 metropolitan areas in the United States in numbers of patent awarded by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Site of the Bosnian peace talks, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, is one of the largest Air Force bases, is home of the Air Force Logistics Command, is the foremost research and development center in the U.S. Air Force, and is home to the National Museum of the United States Air Force, the oldest and largest military aviation museum in the world.
Housing in the Dayton Metropolitan area is varied and affordable, even on a student or new graduate's budget. Downtown Dayton is easily accessed from major interstates and surface roads; a 10-minute drive from downtown gives you access to more housing options than you could possibly consider. Dayton and its neighboring communities offer the full range of neighborhood preferences with many fine public and parochial schools from which to choose.
When it comes time to take a break from work you will find that the Dayton area offers a variety of cultural and recreational diversions. The Oregon District, a short walk from our offices, features many interesting restaurants and pubs, many featuring a full range of live music, whatever your preference. The newly expanded and renovated Dayton Art Institute includes more than 10,000 works; the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra provides numerous concert series; other performing groups in the area include the Dayton Ballet, the nationally-known Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, the Dayton Bach Society, and the Dayton Opera. Local, national and international performing artists find a world-class stage awaiting them at The Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center. The Dayton Opera and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra call the Schuster Center home, and it showcases touring Broadway plays. A variety of local performing arts treasures, including the Dayton Ballet, make use of the facilities. The Victoria Theatre and Memorial Hall provide attractive performance venues; this mix is complemented by numerous highly-regarded theater and musical groups performing in a variety of venues around town.
The Dayton area is fortunate to have an array of summer entertainment including the Fraze Pavilion concert series in neighboring Kettering (a five-minute drive from downtown Dayton) and national touring acts appearing at Wright State University's Ervin J. Nutter Center. Courthouse Square, located in the center of downtown Dayton and home to FI&C's offices, hosts a variety of summer lunch time and evening events on the Square featuring libations and live music. The nationally recognized and awarded Downtown Dayton Cityfolk Festival, an outgrowth of the National Folk Festival hosted in Dayton from 1996 through 1998, features performances by some of the world's leading traditional artists.
Dayton is an easy drive to Cincinnati (45 minutes), Columbus (75 minutes), and Indianapolis (2 hours), further increasing recreational and entertainment options.
If your recreational interests are in sports, there are many opportunities for participants and spectators alike. The Miami Valley features miles and miles of bike paths, and many high-quality community recreational complexes. The area has over 50 public golf courses within 30 minutes of downtown, and is widely recognized as a hotbed for summer softball leagues. Whatever your sporting interest, Dayton accommodates. If you enjoy spectator sports, Daytonians have a wide range of choices readily accessible at both collegiate and professional levels. The University of Dayton fields Division I athletic teams in many intercollegiate sports and is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. Wright State University also competes at the Div. I level and is a member of the Horizon League. Dayton's minor league baseball team, the Dragons, plays to sold-out crowds in an all new downtown stadium. Dayton also supports a minor league hockey team, the ECHL Dayton Bombers. A short drive to Columbus, Cincinnati, or Indianapolis provides an ever-widening array of sports entertainment including Ohio State football, Cincinnati Reds baseball, Cincinnati Bengals and Indianapolis Colts football, Indiana Pacers basketball, the Indianapolis 500-mile race and the ATP Masters and Women's Open and U.S. Hard Court Tennis Championships to name a few.

Dayton has a close-knit, collegial legal community and an active court system. Courts located in the city of Dayton include the United States District Court and Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Ohio, the Ohio Second District Court of Appeals, the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas (continually recognized as one of the most-efficient court systems in the U.S.), and Dayton municipal courts. LexisNexis, the on-line, electronic information concern, is headquartered in the Dayton area and has a close relationship with FI&C; a LexisNexis representative visits the firm weekly. LexisNexis is also a client of the firm.
The Dayton legal community is fortunate also to have access to the University of Dayton School of Law, located a few minutes south of downtown. In August, 1997, UDSL opened Keller Hall, its $23 million state-of-the-art law school facility, which has been recognized as one of the finest law school facilities in the country; it features a model courtroom to accommodate 220 people for real and mock trials. The University of Dayton School of Law and its new law school facility continue to provide the Dayton legal community with a tremendous resource. FI&C contributed generously to the new law school complex, and was recognized for its contribution by the naming of UDSL's new Admissions Suite for the firm. FI&C lawyers also serve the law school community as adjunct professors, and in numerous other capacities including career planning and placement, law school recruiting and assisting with moot court and mock trial competitions.
